Technical Overview
Stainless steel grade 446 is a high-chromium, ferritic alloy renowned for its exceptional resistance to oxidation, especially in elevated-temperature environments ranging from 1500°F to 2200°F (815°C to 1205°C). Among the 400-series stainless steels, SS 446 and SS 317 317L Pipes and Tubes exhibits superior cyclic oxidation resistance, making it ideal for intermittent high-temperature exposure. Though not known for high-temperature strength, its composition—enhanced with elements like nitrogen for grain refinement—provides excellent thermal stability and resistance to corrosive atmospheres. Additionally, this material performs well in environments exposed to molten copper and brass, adding to its versatility in challenging operating conditions.
Applications & Industry Use
SS 446 pipes and tubes are widely recognized for their excellent tensile strength, dimensional stability, surface finish, corrosion resistance, and long operational life. These features make them a preferred choice in high-temperature and chemically aggressive environments. Common industries utilizing this alloy include petrochemical plants, power generation facilities, oil and gas refineries, pulp and paper mills, construction, and the production of specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Heat exchangers, exhaust systems, and processing equipment are among the key application areas where SS 446 proves its durability and thermal performance. Each batch undergoes rigorous quality testing—including mechanical strength, pitting resistance, and toughness—to ensure compliance with international standards. For safe and secure delivery, products are packaged in sturdy wooden crates or protective bundles.
